Bare Hands

Select an empty hotslot to use your bare hands. You can break a large number of things using only your hands, but of course not as fast as using the proper tools. Using an improper tool, such as using an axe to dig dirt, will mine at the same speed as your hands.
Using your hands is the only way to knock fruit off of plants and items off of shelves (without destroying them).

• The uppermost hotslot is configured to be used as bare hands, as items (other than tools) aren't automatically placed into it when picked up.
  

• You can also enable the Keep Last Slot Empty option, to block any item you pick up from going into the bottom slot.
